Message from Chonying Chen......I am not clear about the situation in other countries. But in China, because of the pressure on mitigating climate change and the increasing price of coal resources for heating in Northern China, companies and governments in China are now focusing on renewable rural technologies, e.g. solar technology and improved biomass cook stoves. In terms of stoves, governments and companies are now focusing on designing and producing newly improved semi-gasifier biomass heating stoves for rural households and institutions. However, the technology is still not good enough. Most of stoves in the market still have the tar problem.
n response to Chongying Chen I think any coal burning combustion stove will produce tar in the same way that wood burning results in poly aromatic hydrocarbons. Depending on the main fuel source of a country, which for China is coal, even improved stoves do not solve all the problems, however by improving combustion efficiencies, and using chimneys and smoke hoods at least the levels of indoor air pollution can be reduced.

The only way to avoid this as you say is to use renewable alternatives. Like using a biogas stove or ethanol stove though these do still release greenhouse gases. There are many stoves on the market which offer improved designs even though there is no one design that is perfect and what is appropriate for different countries is also important to consider here. (See http://www.hedon.info/Stoves+Database) however so far we have not succeeded in introducing viable alternatives in many areas. What can be done to improve this? Do you think solar is a viable alternative for China?

This is timely, household energies would be at a no risk truck , if we had this some years back. come this be , we need every bodies effort. Who will mobilize the mass to this life challenging matter?
All needs active participation at all levers, lets start with easy numbers if we a to win this challenge.
The time has come for the world to initiate a standard for household energy with particular reference to cooking energy. it should not stop at this, but should go further in assisting the people especially those who can not afford the standard in acquiring it. it is common knowledge that the adverse effect of climate change will not only affect the people in the rural areas, but also the very wealthy.
