BURN works to save lives and forests in the developing world by designing and manufacturing clean burning cookstoves. BURN is currently constructing a modern manufacturing facility in Kenya that will produce more than 3.5 million fuel efficient cookstoves and create more than 200 jobs, while saving over 100 million trees in the next 10 years alone. With financing from GE, US State Department, UN Foundation and private investors BURN is poised to become a global leader in the clean cookstove space, with rapid growth expected in 2013 and beyond. BURN is currently seeking candidates for a Production Engineer at our Branch office in Kenya. The successful applicant must be closely aligned with BURN’s mission and willing to work in a dynamic work environment. The Production Engineer will work closely with the manufacturing team and will report directly to the General Manager in Kenya and work with the Chief Technical Officer.

  • Day-to-day management of the production line and workforce. Including working with vendors, staff, and management regarding purchases, procedures, product specifications, manufacturing capabilities, and production schedules.
  • Work with Chief Technical Officer to develop and coordinate production standards, quality control objectives, and activities to resolve production problems, maximize product reliability, and minimize cost.
  • Provide manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labor, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements.
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning work flow, space requirements, and equipment layout in conjunction with the Chief Technical Officer.
  • Work under the supervision of the General Manager to determine production volumes and staffing requirements.
  • Assure product and process quality by designing testing methods; testing finished-product and process capabilities; establishing standards; confirming manufacturing processes.
  • Keep equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures; requesting special service.
  • Maintain product and company reputation by complying with government regulations.

Location: The candidate will work from BURN’s Washington State offices for 2-4 months in advance of the Kenyan placement

Start Date: May, 2013

Duration: Minimum of 2 year commitment

Starting Range: $60,000

Desired Experience
  • 3 years Project Management
  • 3 years Lean Manufacturing
  • Working experience punching and forming sheet metal
  • Working experience with relevant production equipment, specifically stamping presses and tool & die
  • Manufacturing methods and procedures, including process flows, value stream mapping and MRP
  • Presenting technical information
