Bilingual Communications Officer - English-French

Salary: 25K annual

Post: 1 year fixed-term contract (with possible extension)

Based in the GVEP’s head office in London, the Communications Officer will assist the Communications Manager in keeping the website up to date, writing and editing copy in English and French, supporting the whole organisation with its internal communication and knowledge management activities. The role also includes promoting GVEP’s brand through social networks, blogs and online fora and assisting with the production of publications material (annual reviews, brochures and marketing material, including video and audio files).

Candidates will be of graduate calibre, bilingual (French and English) and have the confidence and ability to communicate with a broad range of stakeholders. They will have excellent written skills both in French and English, good research skills and the ability to summarise complex information. The candidate will have a good working knowledge of digital and social media including web based content management systems (Drupal in particular). Some knowledge of the energy issues in Africa in a business environment would be a bonus.

Job description:

  • Supporting the Communications Manager in the implementation of the external and internal communications strategies.
  • Sourcing, writing and editing clear and concise content following GVEP’s editorial and style guidelines for online and off-line environments. This involves researching and writing news stories, case studies, photo and video stories in English and French. Working closely with the Africa team to gather material for publication; formatting images for the web using Photoshop; editing photo based stories for our Flickr profile; assisting with the production of publications, marketing material and a quarterly e-newsletters.
  • Assisting with research and preparation of presentations in a professional environment.
  • Maintaining and updating web pages using GVEP’s web content management system (Drupal) and liaise with the external web development and marketing agencies.
  • Helping to keep the organisation informed about developments in our industry, by highlighting to internal audiences the publication of new reports, research studies etc
  • Supporting GVEP’s search engine optimisation strategy in the production of analytics reports (using Google Analytics); and assisting the Communication Manager with our Google Ad Words campaigns.
  • Supporting the social media strategy by consolidating GVEP’s brand on Anglophone and Francophone social networks and maximising social media engagement.
  • Supporting GVEP’s marketing and PR strategy and liaise with the francophone media in West Africa where appropriate.

Person Specification:
  • Outstanding writing and research skills
  • Fully bilingual in English and French
  • Excellent interpersonal and team work skills
  • Degree in media and communications; journalism or mass communications
  • Internet technologies savvy: familiarity with HTML and with handling content management systems, image editing softwares and mass campaign tools: specifically Drupal, Word press and Adobe Creative Suite Programs such as Photoshop and Premiere.
  • Highly responsive and capable of working well independently
  • Prior blogging experience would be an advantage
  • Understanding of, or experience with link building
  • Experience using social networking platforms
