Supported by SNV and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the programme was launched in 2003, since when it has supported the construction of over 140,000 biogas digesters, created employment for more than 5,700 masons and improved the lives of more than 700,000 people through enabling access to clean, safe and sustainable energy.

Founded in 2008, the World Energy Forum is an international not-for-profit organisation that promotes cleaner and safer energy and sustainable development worldwide. The forum facilitates political will as well as research, technological advancement, and capacity-building so as to achieve an energy-secure world. a commercially viable biogas sector, the programme contributes to both rural development and environmental protection – improving community health and sanitation, creating jobs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The World Energy Awards will be presented at a ceremony on the opening day of World Energy Forum 2012 on October 22 in Dubai, UAE.

This is the third international award won by the Biogas Programme, following the Energy Globe Award presented to the programme in 2006 and a 2010 Ashden Award for sustainable energy.
