Title: Field Representative (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia)
Type: Full-time Consultant (6 months with the possibility of extension)
Reports to: Associate Director

Potential Energy, Inc. (http://potentialenergy.org) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to adapt and scale technologies that improve lives in developing countries. Our flagship Darfur Stoves Project provides Darfuri women with specially developed cookstoves, which require less firewood, decreasing women’s exposure to violence while collecting firewood and their need to trade food rations for fuel. Potential Energy is now in an exciting period of growth, as we transition to a market-based approach in Darfur and launch a pilot project in Ethiopia.

To support our vision to dramatically increase access to fuel-efficient cookstoves, Potential Energy seeks an entrepreneurial and resourceful Field Representative to help navigate the organization’s launch in Ethiopia and to build the capacity of our field partners in Darfur. The ideal candidate will bring a blended background of exceptional private and social sector experience with a passion for working high-impact start-up settings.

The Field Representative will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with occasional visits to Khartoum and/or Darfur, Sudan. The position may also include travel to Potential Energy’s HQ in Berkeley, California. This consultant position is approximately six months in length with the possibility of extension.

Main Responsibilities and Duties:

Ethiopia Stoves Project (75%)
Coordinate Berkeley-Ethiopia Stove marketing trial planned for December 2012-March 2013
Support local partner and HQ in conducting a Call for Proposals for local manufacturing partners.
Participate in stove design modification process by reporting on user feedback to local partners, manufacturer and HQ
Report to the Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy on the project’s status
Assist establishing local stove production; develop and maintain relationship with manufacturing partner
Serve as an intermediary between field partners and HQ; maintain positive relationships with various stakeholders; serve as on-the-ground Potential Energy representative
Provide regular updates to HQ and assist in reporting on the project’s status to funders
Support monitoring and evaluation efforts
Collect information and create materials for communication to supporters (photos, stove user profiles, etc.)
Support field activities related to carbon asset development (monitoring, education of local stakeholders)

Darfur Stoves Project (25%)
Assist in development and expansion of cookstove supply chain in Darfur, working with our local partner, Sustainable Action Group (SAG) as importer/assembly/distributor
Support capacity building for SAG in operations (import, assembly and inventory management, financing, logistics), marketing (distribution, promotion, sales force management), reporting (financial, operational) and planning. Train marketing officer.
Support field activities related to carbon asset development (monitoring, education of local stakeholders)
Analyze market conditions (import tariffs, inflation, demand conditions, new supply opportunities, e.g. manufacture locally)
Develop and strengthen relationships and partnerships with local NGOs, government and private sector
Collect information and create materials for communication to supporters (photos, stove user profiles, etc.)

Experience, Education, Traits:
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in a related field a plus.
Proven ability to interact effectively with a variety of stakeholders
Three to five years experience in international development, program management, logistics, marketing, and/or social enterprise.
Experience living and working in Africa
Excellent verbal, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Entrepreneurial spirit, strong problem-solving and analytical skills, ability to work well under pressure and with deadlines, and to track multiple projects at one time
Flexible and willing to respond to changing priorities and assignments as necessary; willing to accept and work with significant level of uncertainty
Ability to manage multiple initiatives within a dynamic environment, prioritizing both the urgent and important, without compromising productivity
