Brief Description of CIC

A consortium comprising of PwC, Strathmore University, Global Village Energy Partnership (GVEP) International and Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) have been awarded the infoDev – World Bank grant to establish a climate innovation center in Kenya.

The Kenya Climate Innovation Center (CIC) aims to accelerate the development and deployment of locally relevant climate technologies thus providing a country driven approach to climate change in support of the Kenya Government’s Greening Kenya initiative and Vision 2030. The CIC will provide services and financing to enable local small and medium enterprises to develop and implement innovative climate change mitigation and adaptation solutions that meet local needs profitably. Solutions will be in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energy, energy access, water access, climate adaptation and agribusiness. The CIC will become the focal point of innovative commercial development of profitable climate-related business in Kenya and potentially East Africa.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic guidance to the CIC towards meeting its objectives and delivering its targets;
  • Develop a yearly marketing communications plan and ensure its execution;
  • Report to the Advisory Committee on a regular basis as required by the Governance policy;
  • Support businesses being incubated and ensure high quality service;
  • Lead the effort in business development for increased activity and sustainability of the CIC;
  • Guide and implement the strategy for scaling-up CIC activities, including talent management;
  • Manage staff on a day to day basis ensuring performance against agreed objectives;
  • Ensure compliance to legal and fiduciary requirements of the government of Kenya and the finance and procurement procedures of the World Bank;
  • Prudently manage finances and other resources, including helping incubated businesses manage their resources where necessary;
  • Brand and promote the CIC to ensure high visibility and a positive image of the center, the World Bank (infoDev) and its sponsors;
  • Spokesperson for the CIC in discussions with stakeholders and donors, in conferences and other relevant forums as well as at media events;
  • Maintain strong and effective relations with Government, Donors, Industry associations and other stakeholders, including participating in dialogues on relevant policy areas; and
  • Develop and maintain strong industry and competitive knowledge in clean technology especially those relevant to the incubated companies.

Experience/ Education Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years’ practical professional experience working with start-ups as an advisor, mentor or entrepreneur;
  • Minimum of a strong Bachelor’s Degree with a business bias. An MBA from a reputable institution would be an added advantage;
  • Proven track record for entrepreneurship and innovation and for mentoring young businesses and ventures, with a clear focus on achieving success for the CIC’s client businesses and the sustainability of the CIC itself;
  • A good working knowledge of finance;
  • Experience and extensive network in the mitigation and adaptation technology sectors;
  • Strong experience of capital raising and in investor/investment management in the small business context, whether as entrepreneur, investor or financial advisor;
  • Dynamic and entrepreneurial individual with the business development capability to deliver financial sustainability and growth for the CIC, by forging new business models and developing new income stream;
  • Superlative communication skills, both written and oral, including logically structuring and delivering presentations;
  • Strong analysis of, and demonstrated ability to articulate an agenda for Clean growth in the adaptation and mitigation technology sectors, especially with respect to business incubation, technology adoption, funding, and scientific collaboration;
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to understand diverse parts of an organization and its stakeholders and beneficiaries and bring them together to realize the organization’s mission;
  • Strong time management skills, with ability to set priorities and delegate responsibilities;
  • Demonstrated people management and interpersonal skills, with supervisory experience and ability to lead;
  • Ability to facilitate dialogue among a diverse constituency;
  • Strong commitment to ethical values and transparency; and
  • Strong computer skills, preferably with experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Project and Outlook.
