An uplifting, engaging and inspiring experience... Come and join us in creating a magical place full of possibilities and find out how we can collectively shape the future of our world.

Small Is…Festival will be packed with things to do, see and learn. Get involved in a hands-on workshop, sit back and listen to an inspiring talk or voice your views in a debate. Get playful with games and activities and enjoy great music. There will be fantastic food, entertainment and a ‘fringe’ area for you to occupy and participate in. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll be sure to make new connections and expand your mind.

Since 2008, Practical Action and Engineers Without Borders have held a small annual festival to celebrate the ideas of E. F. Schumacher. The Small Is…Festival enables people to share, learn and be inspired by sustainable living, international development and appropriate technology.

This year will bring together the curious minds of experts, activists, students and families from around the world. Together, over one summer weekend, we will create, debate and share the evolution of our thinking.

Our theme is Power to the People. It provides a springboard from which to explore some of Practical Action’s upmost concerns – how to tackle energy poverty in the developing world and how we can provide sustainable energy access for all. We will discuss how inequality can be transformed into empowerment and social change.

This innovative collaboration between Practical Action, EWB UK, the Royal Academy of Engineering and YOU will see the best event yet. Over a thousand people will gather in the beautiful grounds of Practical Action’s HQ, The Schumacher Centre near Rugby. They will be welcomed into spectacular grounds with inspiring talks, practical workshops and challenging debates. The ‘fringe’ area is open to audience participation with a speaker’s corner and skill shares. Amongst the waves of enthusiasm and hives of activity there will be delicious food, music and entertainment.

What to Bring

With your thinking hats and dancing shoes, open hearts and minds, your dubious arguments and loud debating voices there are some practicalities to consider. Here’s a checklist to remind you what to bring…

Tent – we’ll all be camping!

Sleeping bag – to keep you warm at night.

Umbrella, waterproofs, wellyboots – British summertime can be unreliable so be prepared

Sun cream – we’ve ordered sunshine...

Cash for food and drink – please support food and drink traders on site

Water bottle – to keep rubbish on site to a minimum
