Radha's Message

To the Alliance's Partners, Donors and Friends:

I am writing to you from Abuja, where I am participating in the launch of the Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cookstoves today. With a goal of 10 million households adopting clean cooking solutions by 2020, the Nigerian Alliance will be an important partner to the Global Alliance over the next decade. I will then travel on to Ghana to participate in the ongoing market assessment of the country’s cookstove sector, as well as visit some of our partners’ factories and programs. I look forward to reporting back on the Nigerian launch and the Ghanaian projects next month.

Since we last spoke, it has been quite a busy month for the Alliance. Most recently, we’ve wrapped up an exciting week of activities and events honoring International Women’s Day on March 8th:

  • Alliance Global, Ambassador Julia Roberts, penned an op-ed for The Guardian, which you can read about inside this newsletter.
  • The Alliance convened a panel on clean cookstoves during the annual Convention on the Status of Women in New York.
  • I had the opportunity to participate in a Potential Energy panel discussion (the organization behind the impressive Darfur Stoves Project) while meeting with stakeholders and partners in California.
  • The Alliance held its West Coast Stakeholders meeting with the University of California School of Public Health and more than 45 partners, implementers, researchers and stove manufacturers.

Additionally, February 28-29th the Alliance and PCIA were in The Hague, Netherlands, working with the International Organization of Standardization on the first set of interim standards for clean cookstoves and fuels. I was very pleased with the spirit of collaboration from our partners, and am encouraged by the results of the two-day workshop. While an official readout is forthcoming later this month, please check out the article on the workshop inside.

Also in this month’s newsletter you’ll see an update about the Alliance’s upcoming Request for Applications on Cookstoves and child survival. This important research will help strengthen the evidence about the health risks associated with smoke from cookstoves and fuels, and we welcome submissions from experts throughout the sector.

Furthermore, as new regional and national cookstove alliances are established, their relationship to the global Alliance must be defined in order to optimize synergies and scale up adoption of clean cookstoves and fuels. In this newsletter, please take a look at the guidelines that define Alliance Affiliation for input.

Lastly, be sure to read about Alliance partner EcoZoom and their work to improve cookstoves in Mexico.
Sincerely,

Radha Muthiah, Executive Director
