The Frankfurt School, UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate and Sustainable Energy Finance, offers its Summer Academies.

Due to overwhelming demand, two Sustainable Energy Finance Summer Academies will be offered in 2012: The first will take place in Frankfurt, Germany from July 15 to 20, and the second in Nairobi, Kenya from October 21 to 26, with special regional focus on Africa. This year they expect to welcome participants from more than 50 countries. These two Academies are presented within the new framework of the Frankfurt School – UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate and Sustainable Energy Finance (the Centre).

Building on a world-renowned reputation, the Frankfurt School Summer Academies are designed to offer project developers, policy advisors, financiers and consultants the highest-calibre financial training programmes. Practitioners of the Summer Academies will gain a comprehensive framework for financing renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in both emerging and developing markets, including practical, integrated knowledge and tools. The Academies also offer participants a wealth of opportunities for networking and problem solving with other relevant stakeholders.

Topics covering both SEF Summer Academies include:
  • Climate change & policy negotiations
  • Sources of financing: public, private and carbon markets
  • Project analysis from RE/EE: Risk identification & allocation, cash flows, and financial modelling
  • Real-life case study

Specific topics for Frankfurt:
  • Trends and markets for sustainable investments
  • Legal issues: laws, regulations and insurances
  • Carbon Finance: Certification and market (CDM, JI)
  • Overview & structure of RE/EE project finance: Industrialised, transition and developing countries

Specific topics for Nairobi:
  • Potential for RE/EE projects in Africa
  • Challenges and opportunities for successful investments in clean energy technologies
  • RE/EE Microfinance and SME finance
  • Broad insight in the economics and dynamics of the most significant RE sources.
