The Ashden Awards bring to light inspiring sustainable energy solutions in the UK and developing world and help ensure that they are spread more widely. From an entrepreneur rolling out solar power across rural India to a school adopting clean energy and green learning in England, the winners are passionate about bringing change to their communities and the planet.

International Awards
The 2012 awards are seeking applications from:
  • Organisations delivering end user or carbon finance that benefit the poor.
  • Manufacturers of new products providing renewable electricity or clean cooking for low income customers:
  • Off-grid and grid-connected renewable electricity schemes bringing significant local benefits.
  • The production of renewable fuel for heat or electricity generation.
  • Sustainable energy schemes or enterprises that demonstrably reduce deforestation through their work.

Past international winners include fuel-efficient stove programmes; businesses selling solar home systems and lanterns; biogas schemes to replace fuel wood for heating and cooking; businesses producing biomass pellet from crop waste; and micro-hydro schemes. Entry is free, and up to six winners will receive £20,000 each in prize money, with one winner receiving a gold award of £40,000. The awards will be presented at a VIP ceremony in London in May 2012.

UK Awards
The 2012 awards are seeking applications from:
  • Businesses that have made local renewable energy and energy efficiency products and services more accessible.
  • Companies that are working to minimise carbon emissions from the built environment.
  • Organisations that have carried out an effective programme to improve efficiency, reduce demand or increase the supply of renewables.
  • Schools or colleges which have developed both an ethos and practice of sustainability.
  • Organisations promoting behavioural change to reduce CO2 emissions.

In addition to individual prizes of up to £10,000, with an overall UK Gold Award of £20,000, a short broadcast-quality film is made about the winning work and offers the winners a substantial package of benefits and support to help them grow.

Eurostar Ashden Award for Sustainable Travel
If your organisation is delivering or facilitating sustainable travel at a local level, and is based in Belgium, France or the UK, then you can apply for this award. Winners will share £30,000 in prize money.
