As part of the build up to this year’s Small is… Festival, they will be going through the basic process of making charcoal and then making them into briquettes, and building three Arborloo latrines to serve the visitors for the festival.

The course will cover the key essentials in charcoal briquette making and latrine construction, as well as offering the opportunity to design and create various types of superstructures to cover them.

Smoke from open wood fires leads to a large number of deaths in the developing world, due to causing respiratory problems, especially in women and children. Charcoal is much cleaner with burning, and can be easily made from alternative fuel sources, helping to reduce the amount of deforestation. We will be going through the basic process of making charcoal and then making them into briquettes.
